Planning summary

When coming to plan for my music video I would say it has been the most detailed and time consuming process. Although it being the most time consuming process it was definitely the most useful and effective in the creation of my main music video and the ancillary products.

I began my planning with generating ideas, where I for example researched different song ideas and locations where I could film my music video. Conducting these tasks were useful as it allowed me to plan how I wanted to create my music therefore saving time when actually coming to create it.

In relation to the pre-production stage of the planning processes of my course work. I created tasks such as a story board and shooting schedule, which I followed as much as possible when preparing to shoot, as it gave me an idea of how I wanted my music video to look. My storyboard was my original ideas for my music video and how I wanted to represent the song. I therefore followed the scenes of the storyboard whilst traveling around New York so I could meet my original ideas as much as possible and not divert from the story line.

My planning tasks came to an end with tasks such as contacting the band and artist of who’s song i’m using, and actor release. Conducting tasks like these were important as it allowed me to gain permission from the artist and the actors to use them in my music which would be useful in future if I am contacted with any rights problems.

In my A2 coursework I have created three products; a main music video and two ancillary task consisting of a magazine advert and a digipak. I decided to create all three of these products around the song ‘Latch’ by Disclosure.

When coming to create my music video I had already researched the lyrics to the song ‘Latch’ by Disclosure, and discovered that the lyrics explain and tell a story of two people falling head over heels in love with each other. Therefore when coming to create my music video I kept this idea of love in mind however I decided to create it with a modern twist and instead of having two people falling in love with each other, I decided to show a group of women taking on and falling in love with a huge iconic city, such as New York.

The music video portrays a variety of shots of a group of women walking the streets of New York in very many interesting and unusual places. I focused a lot on lights and colours throughout my music video therefore decided to shoot in a location with a neon orange mirrored escalators and a neon blue light box to keep the fun light hearted feel of New York. I also decided to have only women featured in my music video because I wanted to empower the women and gender, and portray that women can go traveling and take on a huge city alone without a male presence.

My music video is fully narrative based because I wanted my audience to relate and identify to my characters and to use my music video as an idea of entertainment and escapism.

Artist Mise-en-scene

This is my artist mise-en-scene presentation which includes what my main protagonists in my music video is going to be wearing and what their make-up will look like. It was important and effective to make this post because it helped broaden my understanding of what each of my characters will look like in the final product. In addition to this it will help present women in a natural and positive way.

In my music video I film a group of women traveling round and taking on a huge iconic city together (New York) without a male presence. The idea of the music video was to empower women and their independence. Therefore I decided to portray their make up and the clothes very naturally to emphasis the fact that they are strong, dominant when their alone and bare of strong makeup and clothing, to prove they are just as powerful when in casual clothes. More over I wanted them to look natural because it will help my audience to identity and relate to them and aspire to be like them.
